When it comes to online shopping, patience isn’t a virtue most consumers possess. With technology making everything more convenient, consumer expectations are at an all time high.

In fact, 88 percent of consumers say they’re willing to pay extra for same-day delivery or faster shipping methods. To keep up, small business owners have to take notice of this trend and adapt to the new digital retail landscape.

While integrating same-day delivery isn’t something that most small businesses can do overnight, retailers are adapting fairly quickly. In 2017, only 16 percent of e-commerce brands offered same-day delivery compared to 51 percent in 2018. This particular spike is no coincidence: Retailers recognize that their customers want purchases as fast as possible and are doing what it takes to retain them.

Despite this, integrating same-day delivery poses a challenge for small businesses. While larger retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, and Target have integrated same-day delivery models, this small business owners doing the same must be ready to deal with logistical, staffing and financial challenges.

Before implementing same-day delivery, make sure that your stores and warehouses are spread throughout the delivery area to effectively accommodate your customers, that you have enough staff to prevent shipping bottlenecks and that you’re able to implement order minimums to offset same day shipping costs to make each delivery count.

Incorporating same-day delivery into your business is not something that can be done overnight. This complex delivery system will take time to integrate and there will be growing pains along the way.

However, by adopting the same-day delivery option, not only will you be able to raise your margins by incentivizing your consumers to visit your online store and shop more frequently, but you will also be able to build customer trust and loyalty one delivery at a time.
